Spirited Followers are an experimental folk ensemble based in Cardiff, drawing on Appalachian folk, Indian classical, Greek, post-rock dynamics and avant-garde practices. They blend harmonium, Appalachian dulcimer, guitar, bouzouki, cello, synth and drums to make music that is at the same time rooted and exploratory. They foreground the characteristic textures and timbres of the cultures they draw from, asking how those musical grammars can be stretched without losing their integrity. Flowing between composed material and open, textural improvisation, their aim is to show how non-Western music can lead itself to experimentation.
