Their name is Cantonese for “devil”, and their latest album The Bad Fire shares its title with a Scottish vernacular term for hell. But Glasgow’s Mogwai aren’t always so terrifyingly ablaze. In fact, they mostly trade in epic melancholia, slow-build instrumental compositions, and even soundtracks for films and documentaries. Their songs boast absurdist, often brilliantly funny titles: Pale Vegan Hip Pain, I Know You Are But What Am I?, The Sun Smells Too Loud, Ceiling Granny — that sort of thing — and last year they celebrated thirty years as a band. In fact, they’re more of an institution these days. “Take me somewhere nice”, one of their most beloved songs instructs, and we know just the place: how about Bannau Brycheiniog this August?
