Cat Power — aka Chan Marshall — wrote her 2006 song, The Greatest on the back of a paper plate that had once held a tuna sandwich, while sat at her piano during a soundcheck. Now she’s on tour to celebrate that song, the twenty year anniversary of the album of the same name, and that lightning-in-a-bottle spirit that defines her work. When she’s not seizing lightning, she’s reworking the songs of others as well as her own: she spent a year touring her recording of Bob Dylan’s 1966 Royal Albert Hall record, and last year released Redux, an EP containing a cover of James Brown, a cover of Prince, and a cover of herself.
