The giant Bica, the smuggler Sion Cwilt, the lady of the lake Llyn y fan fach, and the spirit of Annwn: just some of the mysterious, mythological Welsh characters who haunt Mari Mathias’ music. The Welsh-speaking artist grew up near the country’s west coast, and the magic of the Welsh landscape and storytelling seeps into all she does. Lending a contemporary sound to traditional folk songs and original material, her 2022 album Annwn featured samples from her great-grandfather’s cassette tapes, while upcoming collaborative EP Awen features singles released during the Celtic calendar, celebrating the seasonal changes of the year.
